—- My “home” for the next 2 years (at least) —-
OK, 1 week into my new job as lecturer in mechanical engineering at The University of Auckland, I can summarize it in 3 words: I love it!
I will be teaching engineering drawing and CAD (Computer Aided Design) to 569 (!) first year engineering students arriving in February. That will be a tough crowd to please, but it will be a lot of fun as well! It will fit me perfectly.
I am blown away with the welcoming I received. Everything is working like a Swiss watch. I arrived and picked up my office key at the security desk. Settled down in my new office on the 9th floor (which has a nice view, although the coffee room on the 12th floor has an even nicer view - the Sky Tower). Went to get my access and ID cards. Called up the Staff Service Centre (yes, they have that - one phone number for all your staff needs!) Made arrangements to have my new computer delivered (including two huge screens, docking station, and very nifty Skype phone). Applied for a parking permit. Picked it up the next day. And it has just continued like that!
The department assistant had missed to put “Dr.” on my door sign (and then went on vacation), and the head of the department was apologizing multiple times. Today someone else from administration came running with a new sign. I don’t really care, but it would be nice to not be assumed to be the teaching assistant, for once.... ;-)
With classes starting in 6 weeks, and the course material deadline in 3 weeks, this job will definitely keep me busy! The good thing is that I will soon become a CAD guru, and that will be perfect for finalizing the design of our new bike, the Green Envy! :-)
Academics isn’t known for high salaries, but they are certainly treating me well, and that goes a long way!
P.S. I absolutely love the new stapler I received - it is made from old ink cartridges! I have never seen that before.
P.P.S. BTW - it is summer in the southern hemisphere. We had a huge storm pass last week, but now it is back to sunny days (but high humidity and quite a few mosquitos...) ... See more

First stop on the way home - the ChargeNet NZ fast charger. Not because it really needed a charge, but just because it was fun!
Thank you GVI Electric for bringing in mint condition used Nissan Leafs from Japan to New Zealand by the boat load!

--- Happy Holidays! ---
If you haven't received our traditional holiday card (real card, printed on real paper), it is not because you have been particularly naughty or ridden your motorcycle too fast. It is simply because we haven't sent any (yet).
With Bill's New Zealand work visa still in a bureaucratic limbo, we are currently celebrating the holidays on opposite sides of the planet. Because of the uncertainty in our current life, I simply didn't know what to write on the card. Instead, you are getting this collage of holiday cards from 2009 through 2016. The photo in the middle is from our visit in New Zealand in 2014.
We want to say "Thank You" to our all supporters, sponsors, and volunteer crew member that have helped us throughout the year. Without you, the KillaJoule wouldn't be the world's fastest electric motorcycle. We are currently in the design phase of its successor - the Green Envy, with the goal of becoming the world's fastest motorcycle. Period. We will keep you updated with the progress here.
Happy Holidays & Happy New 2018! Let's go even faster!

I am so excited to be a Nissan Leaf owner again. This 2013 beauty is fully loaded with everything I want: pearl white paint (so it stays cool in the New Zealand summer heat), light interior (for the same reason), fast charging port (everything is about being fast in my life!), 360 degree backup camera, low rolling resistance tires, and Bose sound system (yes, my car plays both kinds of music - country _and_ western).
GVI Electric in Auckland, New Zealand just had a boatload of mint condition used Nissan Leafs (and other cars) arrive from Japan (including my new beauty). Check out their website if you are on this side of the planet and thinking of getting an EV: www.gvi.kiwi
All Leafs they sell are also compatible with the ChargeNet NZ fast-charging network! www.charge.net.nz ... See more
