Great article by Heather Wilson with beautiful photos by Scooter Grubb in the “American Motorcyclist” magazine. The article perfectly sums up the basics of motorcycle land speed racing. (Click on picture for readable resolution).

--- Unexpected design constraint: the inside dimension of a sea container ---
I typically post photos of myself working on stuff, so I though it was Bill's turn to be featured today.
We are chugging away on the Green Envy design. One of the challenges is to make it fit in a 20 ft sea container. A 20 ft container is much cheaper and easier to ship than the next size up which is 40 ft. We also happen to own a 20 ft container, thus the Green Envy has to fit in it.
The KillaJoule fits with a few inches to spare, while the Green Envy will be longer so it will need a removable tail to fit. You would think that the ultimate speed machine would allow for unlimited design in every aspect, but it turns out that the inside dimension of a standard sea container is a firm design constraint... I am glad I am only 5' 2" (158 cm), because a small driver's compartment means more room for battery and motors - and horsepower! :-D
Couldn't imagine doing this work without CAD these days. Both Bill and I love Autodesk Inventor.

—- Relaxing day in the workshop —
Bill and I spent a nice relaxing Saturday cleaning and organizing our workshop. There is still a lot of stuff that hasn’t been unpacked since the move from the USA.
The ship carrying the KillaJoule container came in to port here in New Zealand yesterday. Our incredibly helpful freight handler Jenners Worldwide Freight Ltd think there is a chance it will clear customs and bio security inspection before Good Friday. I have five days off from work over Easter, and that will be great for unpacking.
We are working away on the Green Envy behind the scenes, and you will soon see more about it here. Designing the world’s fastest motorcycle is very exciting. 🙂

#ThrowbackThursday and #10YearChallenge (OK, 9-year challenge) in the same post! We can’t wait for the next 10 years! :-D
We are halfway through the semester at Faculty of Engineering, The University of Auckland, and my 560 first year engineering students are finishing up their first CAD design projects where they have to make a LEGO compatible toy. Last year one of my students modeled the KillaJoule and me; I can’t wait to see what they will make this year. :-) ... See more
