If you thought engineering was a boring career choice, think again. Engineering and science is the foundation for exploration and progress. All exploration involves exciting engineering, no matter if you want to explore outer space or push the limits of speed.
I had the pleasure to participate in a panel focused on joy and personal success at the Explorer’s Club in New York City yesterday. This quite unusual panel discussion hosted by Johnnie Walker as part of the campaign “Joy will take you further”. It was an honor to be on the panel with notable speakers such as pro football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan, screenwriter and creator of the HBO television series and feature film ‘Entourage’ Doug Ellin, and psychologist and leading happiness expert Dr. Matt Killingsworth.
I talked about how the joy in my engineering work helped me overcome all the challenges in making the KillaJoule the world’s fastest electric motorcycle. I also pointed out that even if it might be seen as a cliche, the joy is really in the journey rather than the destination. And it better be that way, because in land speed racing you tune and build for 360 days, and race for 5 days.
It was really cool to meet a super star like Michael Strahan. He is such a nice guy, a real inspiration and in general, very interesting. As an example of that, he made a very interesting remark: “Your attitude is worth more than your bank account.” I have never heard it put quite that way before, but it make complete sense. I can’t wait to read his new book “Wake up happy”. I am sure it has lots of quotes like that.
